About Vermicompost

We all know the earthworms found in our soils. The worm converts crop residues and organic materials from fallen trees into small pellets that serve as natural manure for plants. Earthworms are also useful for producing a better harvest without the help of a tractor. The worm helps to maintain the long-term durability of the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil, as well as the soil fertility capacity. The earthworm uses decomposable organic waste as food. 5-10% of the food consumed is absorbed by the body cells of the worm and the remainder of this food is excreted in the form of pellets called Vermicompost. The breeding of the worm is known as vermiculture and, in the controlled state, the process of producing fertilizer by raising the worm is known as vermicompost.

 Chemical Composition of the Vermicompost

The chemical composition depends mainly on the waste naturedes, moisture, the source of the raw materials. In Vermicompost, the NPK ratio is more important than in ordinary compost. It contains all the nutrients necessary for the good growth of a plant. It contains 5 times more nitrogen than farm manure, 8 times more phosphorus, 11 times more potash and 3 times magnesium. Thus, its use is preferable to farm manure.

Nutrient content of Vermicompost

The nutrients it contains are entirely dependent on the degradable waste used to prepare the compost. The better the quality of the components, the better the quality of the compost. Heterogeneous waste is preferable to homogeneous waste as it provides a wide range of nutrients.
